Jessibelle Jean Babb Flowers, 89, passed away on September 24, 2018 at Senatobia Healthcare and Rehab. She was born December 9, 1928 in Sand Springs, OK to Joseph Elbridge Babb and Edna Dawson Babb. The Dust Bowl effects on that state forced her family to move west to California and they resettled there when she was a young child. She finished high school at San Luis Obispo, CA and began her college career at the Bible Institute of Los Angeles. She was 16 when she met a good looking 21 year old WWII Army man right before his discharge back home to Mississippi. They wrote letters and courted long distance for 2 ½ years before she married John Flowers in 1948 and moved to Mississippi. She continued her education at Mississippi College in Clinton and then received her Bachelor of Religious Education degree from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary where they were both enrolled. Being the wife of a pastor brought several moves - and daughters - and her servant spirit was used in each setting.
Mrs. Flowers used her talents over the years to touch all ages. She taught 4th grade Sunday School at First Baptist Church, Senatobia, for many years sometimes teaching lessons with her elaborate flannel graph illustrations, and “wordless book”. One of her great loves was creating countless wardrobes for her daughters. The wedding dress she designed and crafted for her oldest daughter won 1st place in Memphis at the Mid-South Fair. She was adept at several sewing techniques and lent her services to many in the area when asked.
She loved music. She sang for years in the choir at FBC and could also play the flute and piano. Mrs. Flowers was a member of the Cosmopolitan Club for over 50 years and served as an officer for that organization. She worked part-time in Senatobia at B/C Printing Co. and Tomlinson’s Fabric Store before fully retiring. Even then she reached out to those in the Convalescent Center when she would go assist the ladies with manicures and read to the residents on a regular basis during their activity sessions.
Mrs. Flowers was a much loved lady, trusted friend, confidant, caregiver, teacher, and truly consistent Christian example of a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who has now heard the words,
“Well done, thou good and faithful servant.”
She is survived by 1 brother, Joseph J. Babb (Eleanore) of San Jose, CA, her daughters, Becky Wallace (Charles) of Brandon, MS; Rachel Roberts (Steven) of Cordova, TN; and Ruth Patch of Rutland, MA; 6 grandchildren, John Wallace (Hannah), Elizabeth Wallace Moore (Chris), Daniel Roberts (Emily), Olivia Roberts; Tim Patch (Alexandra) and Amy Patch; and 4 great grandchildren, Ivy Wallace, Zeritu “ZZ” Wallace, Emerson Moore and Evangeline Roberts. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph E. Babb and Edna Dawson Babb, brothers David Lee Babb and Timothy Carl Babb, her husband of almost 70 years, Dr. John W. Flowers and their infant son Philip Murrell Flowers.
