Norfleet Ruffin Sledge

Norfleet Ruffin Sledge, age 55, passed away Tuesday afternoon, April 16, 2019, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford, MS.

 

Norfleet was born October 21, 1963 in Memphis, TN to the late Norfleet Ruffin Sledge Sr. (N.R.) and the late Gertrude Johnson Sledge (Trudy). He is survived by two sisters Julia S. Bryan of Culleoka, TN and Meriwether S. Eisenhard of Northport, MI and a maternal aunt Judith Lawson Johnson of Memphis, TN. He is also survived by his 3 nieces and 2 nephews, Clara Leach Darden, Mary Leach Hall, James David Leach, David Laurence Eisenhard and Lucille Meriwether Eisenhard.

 

Norfleet was a lifelong Como resident and member of Holy Innocents Church. He loved reading and was a history buff. He appreciated his Sledge ancestry and as the last in a long line of Norfleet Sledges, while never comfortable being called a Junior, would say to friends, “Just call me Six!” (the 6th). He enjoyed the outdoors and riding around the beautiful back roads of the Mississippi Delta in his vehicle, observing nature while stopping along the way for long visits with his many friends. Norfleet loved fishing, especially along the Spring River in Arkansas, where he spent many a childhood day exploring the river at his family’s vacation home in Hardy. Norfleet loved his pets too. Most recent favorites were the half wild or abandoned cats that wandered up and stayed, bonded to the gentle giant that was Norfleet.

 

Norfleet lived his life on his own terms, a one-of-a-kind, larger than life character who lived and died true to himself. He will be missed by his family and the many friends who also considered him a brother and loved and cherished his company and friendship.
