Carl Thomas Briscoe, 75, of Coldwater, Mississippi, passed away at his home on December 23, 2023.
Carl was born on December 14, 1948, in Memphis, Tennessee, the only child of Albert and Virginia Briscoe. He lived in Memphis most of his life and attended Kingsbury High School.
While still in grade school, Carl became interested in music, and thus began his lifelong love of playing the guitar. During high school, Carl was a member of several popular bands and became a prominent, sought-after guitarist on the Memphis music scene. Later, he was a fixture on the world-famous Beale Street where he played lead guitar in blues bands including the Plantation All Stars and Boogie Blues Band, among others.
Following high school, Carl served in the Vietnam War in the U.S. Army, 159th Aviation Battalion, as an SP4 medical corpsman. He received numerous awards for his service and was most proud of his rifle marksmanship award.
In his professional life, Carl was a jack of all trades. In the 1970s and 80s he criss-crossed America as an over-the-road truck driver with the CB radio handle “Cookie Monster”. He worked in the maintenance department at UT-Memphis for the last 15 years of his career and retired from there in 2013.
Filled with knowledge, stories, and a seemingly endless supply of one-liners, Carl Briscoe left his mark on anyone who ever knew him. He was an undeniably gifted musician and an unforgettable person.
Carl is survived by his beloved wife of 26 years, Donna Marie Briscoe; his children Tammy Mancuso (Tyler), Jamie Troutt and Amanda Ghazali, step-children April Meyer and Shelley Fraley (Anthony Cox); and 7 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Virginia Briscoe, and son, Matthew Briscoe.
Visitation and a memorial service for Carl will be held from 12-2pm with service at 2 on December 30, 2023 at Pate–Jones funeral home in Senatobia, Mississippi. A private burial will be held at the Memphis National Cemetery for veterans of the armed forces, where he will be laid to rest.
