David Mark Slocum Obituary

David Mark Slocum

September 22, 1955 - December 9, 2021

David Mark Slocum, beloved father, son, friend, and community leader, passed suddenly from this earth on December 9, 2021, at Baptist Memorial Hospital - Desoto.

Born on September 22, 1955, to Martha B. Slocum and David A. Slocum, Mark was a native of Coldwater, Mississippi, where he was raised with his older brother, Jerome B. (Jerry) Slocum. After graduating from Magnolia Heights School, Mark earned degrees from Mississippi State University and Auburn University, and he established his first veterinary practice in Coldwater in 1980. He later operated a second veterinary practice in Senatobia, Mississippi, and was known throughout the Southeast for his exceptional skills and compassion as a veterinarian.

Mark devoted over five decades of his life as a dedicated servant to Magnolia Heights School, serving in various capacities such as chairman of the board, chair of two capital campaigns, and chairman of the finance committee. He was also a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Coldwater where he volunteered in a myriad of leadership roles throughout his entire life.

His love and devotion to God, his family, and his community was apparent to all who knew him. He tirelessly and generously gave his time, talents, and resources to those around him, holding everything he had in an open hand.

Mark is survived by his mother, Martha Brantley Slocum; his brother, Jerome B. Slocum; two children, David Mark Slocum, Jr. (Brooke) and Andrea Slocum Del Balso (Brett); grandchildren, Seth Andrew Slocum, Adeline Marie Slocum, Jonathan Brantley Del Balso, and Caleb Neely Del Balso; nephews, Jeremy Redding Slocum (Tiffany), Gaines Brantley Slocum, Andrew Bailey Slocum (Rachel), and Stephen Davis Slocum; great-nieces/nephews, Riley Jane Slocum, Davis Redding Slocum, and Pierce Henry Slocum. He was preceded in death by his father, David Andrew Slocum of Coldwater, Mississippi.

The family requests that memorial donations be sent to Magnolia Heights School or First Baptist Church of Coldwater.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, December 12, at 3:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Coldwater.  Visitation will precede the service from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m., also at First Baptist Church. Following the memorial service, there will be graveside service at Magnolia Cemetery.
