E. L. "Butch" Rhodes, Jr. Obituary

E.L. Rhodes, Jr. (BUTCH) passed away Monday, August 17th, 2021 in Oxford, MS at Baptist- Oxford Hospital due to Covid-19. Butch was born October 4, 1948 in Memphis, TN to Jackie and E.L. Rhodes (SHORTY). He married Glenda Rone on September 2, 1983.

Butch graduated in the Class of 1966 from Senatobia High School. He attended Northwest Community College and Murray State University. He was a member of the US Air Force and served in Vietnam. While in the Air Force he also had duties with the US Marshall’s Service. Following his military service, Butch was employed by the Mississippi Department of Employment Security.  He later served on the Southaven and Olive Branch Police Forces. At the time of his death, he worked for the Security Academy/Bull’s Eye Gun Range in Memphis as an instructor.

Butch loved the outdoors, enjoying fishing, camping and trail rides on his beloved horse Sunshine. Butch was an avid LSU fan and model railroad enthusiast. He and Glenda raised many fur babies and shared a love of horses. He will be remembered for his outgoing personality, joking and storytelling by many who called him “cornbread”.

Left to cherish his memory are many family members and friends. He is survived by his wife, Glenda and father-in-law, George Rone; sisters-in law Sharon Rone Self (Johnny) and Deborah Rone Nelson (Ed); niece and nephews, Todd Rone Parker (Chelsea), Tracie Parker Riley (Rodney), Chuck Poe (Denise), and Perry Poe; grand-niece Jacquelin Poe Simpson (Jim) and Becca Poe Corrao (Josh); great grand nieces and nephews, Landon Riley, Martha Chandler Riley, James and Jackson Simpson. Butch is also survived by cousins Tilly Hood, Brandie Barham Malin, Mark Rhodes, Harold Haven, Barbara Haven Denton, and Melinda Haven Maddox.

Butch is predeceased by his parents, his sister Joy Poe, brother-in-law James Poe, and mother-in-law Martha Upchurch Rone.

Memory donations may be made to the Building Fund of the First United Methodist Church- Senatobia or to the charity of one’s choice.
