Elwin Walker, Sr. Obituary

Elwin Walker, Sr. (78) went home to be with The Lord on Sunday February 23th, 2025.  Elwin was born in Somerville, TN to Clarence B. Walker, Sr. and Marjorie N. Walker.  He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Clarence B. Walker, Jr. (Brown).

Elwin is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Mary Ann Carpenter Walker.  Their loving union provided them with three wonderful children and six cherished grandchildren.  Their oldest, Curt Walker (Robbie) of Senatobia, provided him with his oldest granddaughters: Kate Walker and Kara Walker.  His younger son, Alan Walker (Emily) of Senatobia, added to his joy by welcoming Emma Grace Walker and Paxton Walker.  His youngest, Kathy Walker Vandiver (Jason) of Huntsville, AL, bestowed further blessings with granddaughters Riley Vandiver and Avery Vandiver.  Additionally, he is survived by his younger sister, Gail Walker Dossett (Ken) of Senatobia.

As the family patriarch, Elwin was many things to many people, but the role of “Pop” to his grandchildren was the one he was most proud.

Elwin contributed to the development of countless young people as a coach, teacher and administrator during a 40-year career with Tate and Desoto County Schools.  He served his country and his community with time spent in the Mississippi National Guard and as volunteer fireman. He gave freely of his time with Habitat for Humanity, as a little league baseball coach and as Head Usher for his church.  He was academically accomplished as a graduate of Northwest Junior College, Delta State College and the University of Mississippi - where he earned a master’s degree in education administration.

Elwin had an affinity for sports and outdoors.  He spent countless hours hunting and tending to his horses and cattle at the farm.  A talented collegiate athlete himself, Elwin enjoyed watching Ole Miss and the Dallas Cowboys.  If he wasn’t watching football from his favorite chair, the TV was tuned to an array of westerns that he was so fond of.  Elwin’s hobbies were always more enjoyed in the company of his family.

A man of tremendous faith, he always kept his Bible within reach and often had his Upper Room tucked into his shirt pocket – he said he wanted Jesus close to his heart.  His humility and generosity made him a good motivator to so many, and he was always on time with a thoughtful letter for the ones he loved.

As a life-long member, it is only fitting that his visitation will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 26th with services beginning at 12:00 p.m. at Senatobia First Methodist Church with Rev. Tim Prather and Rev. Clay Moore officiating.  A graveside service will follow at Senatobia Memorial Cemetery.

The family requests memorials be sent to Senatobia First Methodist Church’s building fund or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
