James Burnett “Jimmy” Sowell, 89, of Coldwater, Mississippi, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on July 4, 1936, Jimmy dedicated his life to serving both his family and the people of Tate County. A lifelong dairy farmer, he believed in hard work, integrity, and the values that define rural Mississippi. In addition to his farming career, Jimmy faithfully served the citizens of Tate County as a Tate County Supervisor for 32 years, leaving a legacy of leadership, dedication, and commitment to his community. As President of the Board of Supervisors, he left a lasting legacy through the refurbishing of the Tate County Historical Courthouse, preserving a landmark for both the community and the State. He was able to secure funding from federal and state sources and worked closely with local citizens, including members of founding families in Tate County, to ensure the successful restoration.

Jimmy was preceded in death by the love of his life and beloved wife of 68 years, Virginia Sowell; his daughter, Debbie Sowell; his grandson, Kenny Phillips; and his parents, Helen Merrill Sowell and James Thomas Sowell.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-love, Tommy and Kay Sowell; his grandchildren, Casey Billingsley (Cameron), Mary Sowell (David), Roxanne Veazey (Dusty), and Jay Hindman; his cherished great-grandchildren, Ben, Blade, Easton, Wade, Caroline, Logan, and Tate; his brother, Russell Sowell (Kay); his sisters-in-love, Bonnie Washington (Fred) and Linda Lindstrom (Bob); his nieces and nephews; Arthur “Tootalou” Boyd, a lifelong friend who was like another son to Jimmy and held a special place in his heart; his lifelong friend and caregiver, Roxie Jeanis, and beloved dog, Buttercup.

While he was proud of his many accomplishments, nothing meant more to him than his family. He loved Virginia more than anything in this world, and together they built a life filled with love, faith, laughter, and countless memories. The two especially enjoyed traveling together and spending time with those they loved.

Jimmy will be remembered for his unwavering devotion to his family, his dedication to public service, his strong work ethic, and his kind heart. His wisdom, stories, and steady presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Though our hearts are heavy with loss, we find comfort in knowing that Jimmy has been reunited in the arms of Jesus and his beloved Virginia. Their love story, one that spanned nearly seven decades, continues beyond this life.

His legacy will live on through the family he loved so deeply, the community he faithfully served, and the countless lives he touched throughout his remarkable life.
