Joan Stevens Smith, 72, of Coldwater, MS passed away Monday, June 22, 2020 at Baptist Memorial Hospital Desoto. She was preceded in death by her former husband and friend, William David “Bill” Smith; father, Louis Thomas Stevens; mother, Haywood Delia Stevens and brother, Tommy Stevens. She is survived by her son, William David “ Buck” Smith and his wife Rileyann Smith of Jackson, TN; sister Nell Tarver of Macon, GA; brother Kenny Stevens of Coldwater, MS and grandchildren, Paisley Juliet Smith, Devin Delia Smith, William David “ Tri” Smith.
She worked at Independence Bank/Senatobia Bank/ Sycamore Bank for 40+ years before retiring. She was the smiling face people saw as they walked into the building, and she knew everyone that came in. She did business with generations of customers who always remembered her with fondness.
Above all, Joan loved her family. She was a caretaker to her parents and siblings. Her son, Buck, was her world and she made sure he had everything he needed even if she had to sacrifice what she wanted or needed. She was his provider, his friend, and his biggest fan. Joan’s 3 grandchildren brought her the ultimate joy. She was generous and playful with them. She never tired of watching them play.
Joan never met a stranger. Her family can’t remember ever hearing her speak negatively about another person. She was a talker and a hugger. She would engage with a stranger as easily as a lifelong friend. Her huge heart and gentle spirit have served as an inspiration to all who met her.
An intimate family service was arranged by Pate-Jones Funeral Home and held on June 23, 2020 in Magnolia Cemetery.
The family requests that memorials be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association at ALZ.org. Donations will be used for advancing vital research toward methods of treatment, prevention, and ultimately a cure.
