Meriwether William “Bill” Gabbert II of Senatobia died peacefully on January 14 at Senatobia Healthcare & Rehab after a long illness. He was 75.
He leaves behind his siblings, James “Jim” Gabbert of Hernando, Gwen Hogan (Larry) of Senatobia, and Jill Ferguson (Mike) of Senatobia, and five nephews and nieces.
A son of James and Eleanor Lickfold Gabbert, Bill grew up in Senatobia and graduated from Senatobia High School. He earned a B.U.S. degree in forestry from Mississippi State University.
Bill served as a wildland firefighter in the U.S. Forest Service for 20 years and then in the U.S. National Park Service for 13 years. At the time of his retirement, he was a fire management officer for the Black Hills in South Dakota and had fire management responsibilities in seven national park areas in South Dakota, Wyoming, and Nebraska.
Widely known in the wildland fire community, Bill also created and administered two websites, Wildfire Today and Fire Aviation.
