Mary Virginia Daugherty, 92, of Senatobia, MS, passed away peacefully at her residence on Friday, October 11, 2024. Born on February 6, 1932, in Harrisburg, AR, Mary grew up in a loving family despite humble beginnings.
Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Johnny Daugherty; her sisters, Martha Cuff, Betty Carter, and Kathy McNew; and her brothers, Lee McCulley and Gerald McCulley. She is survived by her daughters, Sheila Daugherty (George Gorman), Rosemary Knox (Rich), and Johnita Canard (Steven Bell); her granddaughter, Amanda Canard; her great-granddaughter, Mary Madalyn (Maddie) Canard; and her special nephew, Mark McNew.
Mary met Johnny while working at Sears & Roebuck in Memphis, TN, during his time in barber school. They married on November 18, 1954, after Johnny returned from the Korean War and began barber college. Together, they built a family and moved to Sledge, MS.
While living in Sledge, Mary operated a resale shop when she wasn’t taking care of her family. After Johnny’s passing, she moved to Clarksdale and later to Senatobia. In Clarksdale, she worked as a Nurse Assistant at Methodist Senior Services’ Flowers Manor for 10 years, providing compassionate care to the residents.
Mary’s life was marked by her dedication to her family and the love she shared with those around her. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Enhabit Hospice Care for the compassionate care Mary received during her illness. Memorials may be sent to the NF Foundation or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
