Robert Mitchell Charlton of Senatobia, Mississippi, laid down his tools and took his final ride home after a full, fiery and spirited life, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on April 9, 1948, in DeKalb, Mississippi, Mitchell was deeply proud of his Choctaw heritage and lived life his own way — loud, loyal, and full of grit
For more than 50 years, Mitchell owned and operated Choctaw Tower Company, climbing and building radio towers all over the United States. He worked hard, told it like it was, and somehow made even the tallest towers and biggest storms look small in comparison.
When he wasn’t working, Mitchell could usually be found hunting, fishing, working on his land, tinkering on something with wheels, or relaxing at his cabin — his personal slice of heaven. He loved a good meal, a better story, and an argument he was sure he’d win (and most of the time, he did).
Robert loved his family fiercely. He leaves behind his devoted wife, Janice Charlton; his children:
Jeff Charlton (Barbara)
Michael Edmond
August Cook (Marc)
Dawn Holman (Bruce)
and his sister, Maxine Charlton-Turner, who shared a lifetime of memories, laughter, and family stories. His nephews Billy Riggs(who he raised like his own child )and Bobby Riggs Nick Tucker, Scott Tucker, nieces Wendy Priscilla, Monica Lynn, Melissa Gail and Tara Turner-Coleman.
He was “Pawpaw” to a crew he adored:
Jessica Charlton, Christina Charlton (Krystal), Matthew Charlton(Becca), Hannah Barr (Steven), Emily Farrow (Jonathan), Justin Holman, Savannah Edmond(James), Lane Edmond, Malachi Charlton, Malcolm Charlton, Brianna Holman, and Jeremy Riggs.
He’s reunited now with his grandsons Robert-Mitchel Charlton and Billy Holman, who preceded him in death and surely welcomed him with open arms and maybe a little mischief.
Robert’s great-grandchildren — Jon-Karter Farrow, Ellis Farrow, Captain Liam Jack Farrow, Aurora West, Arya Vazquez, and Lilith Barr — brought him endless pride and joy.
He was preceded in death by his father, Malcolm Charlton, his mother, Johnnie-Bell Charlton, his brother, Wendell Charlton, and infant sister Gail Marie Charlton.
He loved his family, his freedom, a good hunt, and a great debate. He loved Donald Trump, motorcycles, and being right — and Lord help anyone who tried to prove him wrong.
Mitchell was one of a kind: hardworking, opinionated, loyal to his people, and tough as nails. The world’s a little quieter now without his laugh, his stories, and his “I told you so.”
A celebration of Mitchell’s life will be held at Pate-Jones Funeral home in Senatobia, on Thursday, November 6, 2025. Visitation will be 10am to 12pm and memorial service at 12. In true Mitchell fashion, come ready to share a story, a laugh, and maybe a tall tale or two.
